Chapter Seven

Tempe

I reach for the warm body I fell asleep with, but it’s nowhere to be found. I blink and open my eyes to gaze at the empty bed. I don’t recall coming to the bedroom. My last memory is of resting my head on Mercy’s shoulder while the comedy film we’d chosen played in the background. I must have drifted off. Scanning my surroundings, I see my phone on the nightstand and grab it to check the time. It’s after nine in the morning. Panic shoots through me. I’m running late to training. I bolt upright, but then I remember. No more training. Not for twelve weeks.

I sigh. What am I going to do with myself until then? MMA is my life. I don’t know how else to fill my time. Perhaps I should read some of those books Ashlin recommended about parenthood. I’m going to be a mother, after all. But honestly, reading isn’t my thing. I much prefer podcasts and audiobooks. I slide my legs off the edge of the bed and test them to see if they’ll take my weight. I’m expecting to be a bit shaky after yesterday, but they seem okay. Standing, I look down at myself. I’m still wearing yoga pants and a tank top. I need to have a shower and change into something fresh, but food comes first. Baby wants yogurt.

I leave the spare room and peek into Mercy’s bedroom. The curtains are open and the bed is made, but he’s not in it. I linger in the hallway, just out of sight of the living area, to see if I can hear anything. It’s quiet, so I head through.

“Good morning.”

My gaze snaps to Lucia, who’s sitting at the dining table behind a laptop. “Hi. Has Mercy left?”

She nods. “He had to go to work, but he said to help yourself to whatever you need. And apparently, I’m to keep a very close eye on you.”

I laugh. “You’ll be pleased to know I’m feeling much better today, so I don’t think you need to worry. I’m not completely fine, but the blood pressure medication seems to be helping.”

“Good.” Her eyes lower to my belly. “I want my niece or nephew to be healthy. Do we know which it is?”

“No. I want the gender to be a surprise.” I head to the kitchenette and search the refrigerator for yogurt, berries, and milk to make a smoothie. I add them to the blender that’s sitting on the counter and pause. “Where’s the salt?”

Lucia gestures toward a cupboard tucked into the corner. I grab the salt—which I’ve been craving—and then pause, remembering I’m not supposed to have too much sodium because it’s bad for blood pressure. I set it aside and start the blender, taking a moment to study Lucia while it churns. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to her yesterday. I was in too much pain. But her resemblance to Mercy is obvious. She has the same dark hair, although hers is long and straight, and her eyes are a nearly identical shade of blue.
